The Medford Mush

The Medford Mush is a weekend short-distance dog mushing race put on by the Medford Trailblazers Club. Last year was the first year the kids entered, and it was a three-day race. This year they went down to 2 days. The race was postponed because we lost so much snow earlier in February- they weren’t sure they would be able to reschedule it, but we got more snow and the race was on. Dave had already committed to speaking at Ogema Baptist Church that Sunday, so we told the kids they could only race one day. But wonderful friends of ours kindly offered to take Carter and Moriah back on Sunday. (Their younger son, Dakota, is the first one pictured- he is actually encouraging Carter’s team- who was just behind him- on to the finish!) The weather was great- snowing and in the teens on Saturday. We were out at the rodeo grounds all day as John Henry raced for the first time (the 2-dog, 2-mile race) and Moriah (same as JH) and Carter (3-dog, 4-mile race) both improved their times from last year, so we were very pleased. We even had friends who came out to cheer us on. It was a great time!

Mushing with the RVA

The public charter school we use to homeschool Moriah and Carter this year is called the Rural Virtual Academy (RVA.) We had the opportunity to offer a day of mushing to the 20 students and their parents. We had close to 30 people show up and we had a great day for it. It was cold- maybe into the teens that day- but we had a great time teaching about the dogs, racing, and the sleds before going out to the trails in the Medford School Forest. We brought ten dogs in the dog box Dave built for his truck this fall, and with all the adults to help, it was an easy day. Everyone who wanted to got to drive and the younger kids took turns riding in Dave’s bag. We work with wonderful people through the RVA. Two of them came- Charlie and Sandy- both pictured- and they were helpful, ready to serve and encourgaging, as always. Moriah wasn’t able to mush due to her injury (see previous entry) which has since healed beautifully. As a matter of fact, her basketball team added one last game to the season. She was able to play and it was their only win of the season!

A Season-Ending Injury

Moriah was the only one playing on a community team this winter. It was her first exposure to basketball and they had fifteen or so 5th grade girls turn out for the team. (Huge!) They didn’t win any games, but we had fun watching two games every Saturday, and we were really proud of the girls for not giving up. Moriah missed the last practice and games on Saturday because she sprained her arm pretty badly in practice. If you could see her on defense, this wouldn’t surprise you. She’s an animal!!! She really enjoyed the season and wants to do it again. Now we have to wait and see if she’ll be able to ski or mush again this winter….
