Developing Camp’s Computers Network
Ok so this section talks about the geeky things going on at camp. A little known fact at Camp Forest Springs is that we have 5 separated databases running completely independent of each other. In other words, for each type of registration there is a specific database; four of which are still within a DOS based system. Now, I have to mention that my predecessor, Ron Roberts who pioneered the computer position here at camp, did such a great job of designing these databases that nothing has come close to replacing them…yet. However, my heart goes out to him each time we have to call and ask for tech support to fix glitches that come up from time to time. Furthermore, almost all the records are retyped into another database that controls the information that goes out to our mailings and gifting records.
So why do I share this with you? Well, one of the areas that is high on my priority list is to integrate better communication amongst our staff and to ease the methods of accessible information. You see we would like to get to the point that all registrations can be entered into one place. Then departments can get the information they need to function on their part of the ministry at a moments notice.
I wont lie, it is a big goal and designing a system that works and works well for all staff is not an easy task. I guess that is why God has geared me for this job. These types of tasks gets me up in the morning and keeps me there late in the evenings. As the camp staff has grown in numbers along with each program expanding the little details are harder to prepare for when we don’t have the information we need. Fortunately we are working towards a solution that I think will work well. Those five databases will soon turn into two which in turn will be able to “talk” to each other. Furthermore, the behind the scenes communication at camp will begin to be enjoyable again. My heart hopes to create the environment where the little details will again be very noticeable which makes camp so special.
